Don’t you think sanitary napkins should be provided for free in restrooms just like toilet paper? Most women have menstruation periods for several days each month, for about 40 years through their life. Quite a lot of expenses, uncomfortableness, pains, effort, time, worries about staining clothes, etc., are some of the many burdens they experience.
However, those burdens are not shared with people who do not experience periods. Even though it is so common for women to wait in a long line in front of toilets, and not for men, the number of toilets for men and women are usually the same. It was reported that only one napkin a day was provided to a woman in some evacuation venues in time of natural disasters!
We would like to have all people know about periods and support each other, to make a better work environment for all.
The Women’s Branch, Nagoya University Union of Faculty & Staff decided to put napkins in some of the restrooms of the university as a small step to create a better environment. With the cooperation of Consumer's CO-OP and Gender Research Library (GRL), a napkin box is installed in the Women's and Multi-purpose restrooms on the 1st floor of the Nanbu dining, and the women priority and All Gender & Multi-purpose restrooms on the 1st floor of the GRL.
We make napkins available to those who need them, and welcome replenishments and donations.
This project is ongoing only during the time when our small budget is available, but we hope this trial be extended to further activities in our university. Any comments are welcome to the following questionnaire.
